SMARTY, the low-cost mobile brand running on Three’s UK network, has now introduced eSIM support. Existing customers can switch from a plastic SIM to a digital version through a simple SIM swap. New users and group account owners will also be able to request an eSIM directly very soon. This brings SMARTY in line with other providers already offering the feature and helps prepare its customers for the growing number of eSIM-only devices expected in the coming years.

An eSIM works in the same way as a traditional SIM card, but instead of being a removable piece of plastic, it is downloaded directly onto the phone. It means no waiting around for a SIM to arrive in the post and no need to keep spares if you change networks. It also allows more than one mobile plan on a single device, which is useful for frequent travellers or anyone managing both work and personal numbers on the same handset.
Who is SMARTY eSIM best suited for?
SMARTY’s eSIM option is likely to appeal to customers who want a straightforward setup and flexibility without extra clutter. It is well suited for:
- People who upgrade phones regularly and don’t want to keep moving SIM cards.
- Travellers who want to add a temporary local eSIM when abroad.
- Households who want multiple plans managed on one device.
- Anyone looking for a faster, digital-only sign-up process.
At the time of writing, SMARTY eSIM is available to existing customers by swapping a physical SIM through the online account or app. New customers will soon be able to choose eSIM at the checkout. The feature requires an eSIM-compatible phone, which most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and similar devices now support.
Setting up the eSIM is straightforward. SMARTY sends an email with a QR code, activation details, and instructions. Customers also need to use a four-digit confirmation code, which is taken from their SMARTY dashboard rather than the email itself. On iPhone, the eSIM can be added through Settings by scanning the QR code or by entering details manually, including the SM-DP+ address and activation code. There is also a one-tap install option from the email. On Android devices, the steps are similar: navigate to mobile network settings, add a new plan, scan the QR code and enter the confirmation PIN. Once added, SMARTY should be set as the default line for calls, texts and mobile data, and a quick restart will confirm everything is working.
SMARTY were relatively late to introduce eSIM compared to other UK MVNOs. Providers such as giffgaff, Lyca Mobile, Tesco Mobile, 1pMobile and VOXI had already enabled the feature, often with immediate availability for new and existing users. By contrast, SMARTY customers had previously been told on forums that the service was not available. Other low-cost brands such as Asda Mobile, Lebara, Talkmobile and CMLink still do not yet provide eSIM, meaning SMARTY’s move is significant progress within its part of the market.
For users, the benefits are clear. An eSIM is easier to set up, reduces plastic waste, and makes switching providers simpler. It also offers practical flexibility, especially for people who need multiple numbers on one device or want a cheaper travel SIM when abroad. The change ensures SMARTY customers are not left behind as Apple and other manufacturers introduce phones with no SIM tray, designed only for eSIM use.
Overall, SMARTY’s introduction of eSIM closes the gap with rival MVNOs and puts it on equal footing with digital-first competitors. The process is user-friendly and fits well with SMARTY’s no-frills, online-only approach.
Best features:
- Digital setup without waiting for a physical SIM
- Easy to add or switch plans using QR codes or one-tap install
- Works with a wide range of modern smartphones
- Future-proofed for eSIM-only devices
Things to be aware of:
- Still being rolled out, so new customers and group accounts will need to wait a little longer
- Activation requires use of the SMARTY dashboard to obtain the confirmation PIN
- Older or budget devices may not support eSIM
SMARTY may have been late to adopt the technology, but the addition of eSIM means its customers can now enjoy the same flexibility and convenience already available with many other UK mobile providers. It is a welcome update that modernises SMARTY’s offering and makes it a stronger option for anyone looking for simple, affordable mobile service with the latest features.
